In February 2005 the first edition of the map “Agave, mezcals, and diversity”, was published. The second edition was published in August 2006 . This publication is composed of general information and knowledge, and its objective is to disseminate this information as widely as possible to raise public awareness of the importance of the diversity of mezcals, their sustainable use and consumption with respect to their identity, origin and sustainability.

It includes a glossary, basic references and classification by scientific name. It collates biological, geographical and cultural information concerning 14 species of mezcal maguey. Metl, maguey; ixca to bake: mexcalli, baked agave.
The main source of information are the data from 1,676 plant specimens registered in the National Information System on Biodiversity (SNIB), due, in large part, to the project Conabio V029 Systematics and distribution of mescal agaves by Dr. Abisal García Mendoza, of the Botanical Gardens of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
The common and indigenous names are from bibliographic sources compiled by Xitlali Aguirre and the project Conabio C5007 Technical and common names associated with the use of agave in Mexico, by Patricia Colunga.
