Home - Use - knowledge and use - Handicrafts

The range of handicrafts in our country reflects the variety of knowledge and raw materials involved in their production, which in turn tells us about the diversity of ethnic groups and environments in which each culture develops. It is common to find that the manufactured parts not only solve practical issues in the lives of the producers, but also form part of their worldview.
Artesanías y medio ambiente

The theme of handicrafts and natural resources is vast and complex. With the objective of providing a first approach to the main aspects of this issue, a group of people from different institutions dedicated to handicrafts, as well as artisans and researchers from different parts of Mexico, integrated their experiences in the publication "Handicrafts and the Environment" supported by CONABIO and the National Fund for the Promotion of Handicrafts (FONART, for its Spanish acronym). This publication is related to the natural resources used as raw materials, occupational health, and the environmental damage caused by certain manufacturing processes. It contains the legal framework, but also suggests alternative ways to achieve sustainable production that ensures fair pay, sustainable resource management and the protection of the knowledge and practices of the artisans.
