To achieve the proper management of copal trees, for harvesting either resin, fruit or wood, biological knowledge of the species in question is required, along with community organization and planning. The more we know about the conditions required to maintain a plant species, the better use we can make of it. Traditional knowledge and local experience in the use of each species can contribute significantly to the planning process and subsequent management. The particular strategies to be applied will depend on the product and the species of copal used, as well as the scale and intensity with which it is extracted.

In November 2008, the first edition of the map Copals, diversity and culture, was announced, integrating information and general knowledge. The objective is to disseminate this information as widely as possible to raise public awareness about the importance of copal diversity and its sustainable use and informed consumption, in terms of identity, origin and sustainability.
