The Nuevo Leon Martinez spruce live in small numbers in very restricted places and are now exclusive to the State of Nuevo Leon. Low abundance has reduced their genetic variability, causing the vast majority of of seed produced to be unviable.
The main threats to their habitat are fires and logging. The tree is very attractive and has begun to be planted as an ornamental plant in botanical gardens.
