The Boojum tree looks unusual but very attractive. It forms part of the habitat of pronghorn and bighorn sheep.
It grows in extreme drought conditions only in the Valley de los Cirios and in the Vizcaíno Desert. It is almost exclusively endemic to volcanic and granitic soils.
