Home - Species - Concepts - Categories in International trade

The species covered by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) are included in three appendices, depending on the degree of protection required. Trade in species listed in the appendices is permitted subject to the fulfillment of certain requirements.


Includes species in danger of extinction. In general, trade for commercial purposes is restricted.


Includes species not necessarily threatened with extinction, but for which trade must be controlled in order to prevent this occurring. Also includes species that require regulation due to their similarity to others listed for conservation reasons. International trade is permitted but only under certain conditions.

Includes the population of species in a Party (country) which seeks support from other parties (countries) for their protection. International trade is allowed but is regulated by the country in question.
