 12 marine regions in the world have been identified and sub-divided into 62 marine provinces, which in turn include 232 marine ecoregions. The marine regions are: Arctic, temperate North Atlantic, temperate North Pacific, tropical Atlantic, Western Indo-Pacific, Central Indo-Pacific, Eastern Indo-Pacific, tropical Eastern Pacific, temperate South America, temperate South Africa, temperate Australasia and Southern Ocean. Marine regions of Mexico include; temperate North Pacific, tropical Eastern Pacific, temperate North Atlantic and tropical Atlantic. Of the 232 marine ecoregions, 11 are in Mexico.
