Planning for the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity is a continuous and dynamic process that must reflect changes in the socio-environment. The generation of strategies and action plans provides important tools for determining basic goals and objectives (in the short, medium and long term), courses of action and the allocation of necessary resources to achieve these intended goals. In this regard, the National Strategy on Biodiversity of Mexico (NSBM) represents a collation of strategic guidelines and participative actions of all sections of Mexican society, for the purpose of implementing the three established objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD):
Conservation of biodiversity
Sustainable use of biological resources
Fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from utilization of genetic resources
To achieve the goals outlined in the CBD, and carry out the actions planned in the NSBM from a federal perspective, CONABIO, in collaboration with state governments and representatives of various sections of society, has begun work on developing the State Biodiversity Strategy (SBS), a process which will take into account the cultural, geographic, social and biological diversity of Mexico.
