In 2004, the State Environmental Protection Board (COEPA) requested a joint collaboration with CONABIO to initiate a Veracruz strategy. It was decided to call all major stakeholders, involved in issues related to conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the State, to a first meeting to discuss the strategy. The meeting was attended by nearly 200 experts on the subject, and the first workshop was conducted to define the index and the list of authors.
On October 29th, 2008, the commitment was made to the completion of the Study of Biodiversity of Veracruz and production of the State Strategy. Signatories to the agreement included; the Office of Social Development and Environment, State of Veracruz; University of Veracruz, Institute of Ecology A.C. and CONABIO. Participating as witnesses of honour were Dr. José Sarukhán Kermez, National Coordinator of CONABIO and Lic. Fidel Herrera Beltrán, Governor of the State of Veracruz.
Currently, 100% of contributions are in their final version, and in the editorial process. The Study of the Biodiversity of Veracruz is expected to be published in mid-2009. |
